It is said that the equable climate, abundance of natural resources and cool monsoons, make Kerala the ideal place for Ayurvedic treatments. Kerala is one of the few places on earth whose temperature hovers between 24-28 degrees during continuous rain. Hence the presence of moisture in the air and on the skin makes the natural medicines work at their highest potency.

What Is Shirodhara?

The word Shirodhara is originates from two Sanskrit words; ‘Shiro’ which means head and ‘Dhara’ which means to flow. It is a form of Ayurvedic therapy that involves continuous flow of warm oil (or other liquid) over the forehead from a specific height. The forehead is believed to be a place where the nerves are highly concentrated. The pressure of oil on the forehead causes vibrations and the oil saturates the forehead and scalp, and penetrates into the nervous system. This warm soothing oil is made to continuously flow above the forehead for approximately 30 minutes.

Shirodhara is also called Shiro-Seka. Shirodhara not only involves pouring of oil on the forehead; it also involves a scalp treatment. There are many such scalp treatments but Shirodhara is known to be the most effective and that probably explains its huge popularity worldwide.

Commonly used oils for an Ayurvedic Shirodhara include- Coconut Oil, Dhanwantharam Thailam, Ksheerabala Thailam, Bala Thailam, Mahabhringraj Thailam, Karpasasthyadi Thailam, Triphaladi Thailam.
