Kovalam Beach is a large stretch of three beaches –Lighthouse beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra beach. On the southern end of the beach is a light house situated, due to which the beach is called Lighthouse Beach. This 30m long lighthouse is painted in red and white horizontal stripes. After climbing 142 spiral stairs there is an observation platform, which provides a stunning view. All three beaches attract huge amounts of tourists and are a perfect recreational spot.
Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple
This ancient temple was built somewhere between the 12th and 13th Century and now happens to be a protected monument under the Archeological Department of Kerala. It is situated on the bank of the river Karamana. According to the legends, it is believed that Lord Parasurama is the creator of Kerala and this is the only temple in India that is dedicated to him. This is an important place for his devotees. The devotees pay homage to the departed souls of their forefathers, during the ‘Karkidaka Vavu’ day after taking a dip in the holy water. The Karkidaka Vavu day falls in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, and is a holiday.
About 16kms form Kovalam is located the Akkulam Lake which is an extension of the Veli Lake. The primary attraction here is the boating. Besides this, the place also has a swimming pool, a well equipped children’s park and Anthurium Project. This place is a much preferred picnic spot for families.
The Halcyon Castle is also referred to as the Kerala Palace. It is located just 2kms from Kovalam. It was constructed in the year 1932 by M.R. Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran. The intent behind the construction of this Palace was to have an ideal summer retreat for his family. In 1964, this property was sold to the Kerala Government who then sold it to a private resort group. After changing hands a couple more times, this palace is now owned by Ravi Pillai Group. This place has traditional Kerala style architecture and the beautiful well maintained lawns.
Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour
Vizhinjam is a major port town of Kerala and this is also one of the busiest fishing harbors in the district. It is located just 2kms south of Kovalam. Numerous country boats are seen lying here side by side which makes for an amazing visual. This area is home to some amazing beach resorts. This area also has a plethora of Ayurvedic massage and treatment centers, where various Ayurvedic services can be availed.
Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium
The Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium was established in 1997 and is run by Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). This aquarium houses the rarest species of ornamental fish and invertebrate in the world. This aquarium showcases the butterfly fish, clownfish, moon wrasse, squirrelfish, surgeon fish, lion fish, triggerfish, eels, octopus, stingrays, crabs, sea horses, giant turtles, piranhas and sharks. This aquarium is also famous for its unique Image Pearl Production Technique where a pearl oyster can transform a mould of shell cement into a pearl.
