The first and the most popular activity to do in Thekkady is definitely boating. The 2 hour boating trip through the rivers and lakes of Periyar Wildlife Scantuary is an experience like no other. One can spot many rare animals and other organisms during this boat ride and if you are lucky you can spot elephants too who come to the lake to quech their thirst or have a bath. This boat ride is unique because you get to see animals in their natural dwellings. KTDC and the Forest Department operate this Boat Service and they take about 5 trips a day.
Elephant Safaris are also popular in Thekkady. It’s a fun activity to do and you can take pictures while at it. There are programmes such as One hour with Elephants and Two hours with Elephants, which include Elephant Ride, Photosession, Elephant Bath, Command and Communication and so on.
Bamboo rafting is another fun and adventurous activity to do in Thekkady. It is definitely a treat for nature lovers. The rafting lasts for about three hours and one can see the majestic sights of the forest, the lake and the animals. Animlas like the Sambar, Gaur and the Elephant are often spotted at the edge of the lake.
Thekkady has different guided nature treks that are around 4 to 5kms. The trails covers different landscapes such as evergreen and moist deciduous forests, marshy grasslands etc. This is an excellent opportunity for nature lovers to spot different animals, birds and flaura and fauna. The trekking happens in small groups of not more than 5 people and a local trekking guide. The timings are between 7 am to 10.30 am in the mornings and 2pm to 3pm in the afternoons. About 4000 sq Km of land of the Idukki district is under spice plantations. Since such a large amount of land is under plantation, it is no surprise that the main occupation of the locals is spice farming and trading. The major plantations are of cardamom, pepper, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, nutmeg etc. The plantation tour is an interesting activity to do in Thekkady, especially for people who love nature and want to know about spices. This tour lasts for about 2 to 3 hours and one can also shop spices while at the tour.
